Hurtigruten

The Northern Lights. The Midnight Sun. Hundreds of breathtaking fjords and mountains. Enchanting cities and natural wonders. When sailing aboard a Hurtigruten cruise, you can experience all of these things and more in a once-in-a-lifetime voyage that you won’t soon forget. Cruising year-round from Norway, Hurtigruten (formerly known in the U.S. as Norwegian Coastal Voyages) offers a variety of different specialty and exploration-style cruising itineraries.

With their fleet of 16 small ships, Hurtigruten sails from 34 ports of call on itineraries ranging between 5- and 22-night Norwegian coastal voyages, including expedition cruises in Spitsbergen (in the Arctic), Greenland and Viewing the Northern Lights on a Norway CruiseAntarctica. There are over 1,000 short port to port variations to choose from on Hurtigruten’s Norwegian coastal voyage itinerary.

A Typical Hurtigruten Itinerary

Hurtigruten is able to offer itineraries in the calm and sheltered waterways of Norway’s shores, that larger ships simply cannot reach, thanks to the intimate size of their ships (ranging from 2,191 to 16,151-tons). This results in closer encounters with landscape and wildlife, as well as rare ports of call.

On itineraries focused in the Arctic, you may have the opportunity to see brown bears, penguins, seals, humpback whales, sealions, native birds, llamas, foxes, elephant seals, and albatrosses first-hand, as well as glaciers, tundras, mountains, national parks and icebergs.

On itineraries that take you along the stunning Norwegian coast, you will have the chance to witness the magnetizing Northern Lights phenomenon, explore breathtaking natural fjords, try dog-sledding or go on a riverboat safari among many more things!

Hurtrigruten also offers itineraries and voyages to the Caribbean, Europe, Portugal, North America, Canada and New England and more. Onboard a Hurtigruten cruise ship, their Expedition Team gives informative lectures about the areas being visited, and guests are able to relax, unwind and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

Dining Options

Three hearty meals are offered per day during a Hurtigruten cruise, consisting of traditional Norwegian and continental fare. Breakfast and lunch are in an open-seating format and are buffet-style. Evening meals have assigned seating, with a sit-down waiter service and set menu. At times, lunch can be assigned if the ship is busy. If you’d like to snack between meals, there’s a 24-hour cafeteria as well.

What are Hurtigruten Cruises Like?

The atmosphere is always relaxed and informal during a Hurtigruten voyage, with a non-regimented environment. Hurtigruten is an alternative to a traditional cruise, as each Hurtigruten voyage vessel is a unique combination of a cruise ship and working ship, carrying local passengers and cargo between ports. However, the working aspect of the ship is completely seamless to their cruise vacation guests. While some Hurtigruten cruises may feature a pianist or local singer onboard the ship, the real entertainment is the destination being visited. Travelers that like to visit less “touristy” ports of call, and enjoy an active, destination-immersed vacation, are a great fit for a Hurtigruten voyage.

American Discount Cruises & Travel is proud to offer the best deals possible on all Hurtigruten cruises booked with us. Backed by our "Low Price Guarantee," and powered by our team of expert travel agents, we're sure to exceed your expectations when booking your next Hurtigruten cruise!

Why Choose Hurtigruten?

Unique Voyages
Hurtigruten groups their cruise itineraries into five main regions: Norway, Spitsbergen, Greenland, Antarctica and Europe. Hurtigruten has navigated the spectacular west coast of Norway for 120 years. During a Norwegian voyage, you can enjoy 1,250 miles of fjord-filled landscapes, with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of shore excursions (including dog sledding, and snowmobiling), and Guests enjoying a drink on a Hurtigruten cruise shipthe chance to see the elusive Northern Lights, the Midnight Sun, and the exciting Sea Eagle Safari in summer.

Those looking for an adventure cruise should consider Hurtigruten’s voyages in Spitsbergen, Greenland and Antarctica. Spitsbergen is filled with unspoiled nature and wildlife, with glaciers, whales, seals, birds and rare Arctic flowers. Hurtigruten’s Greenland expeditions bring their guests to the world’s most active glaciers, calving of icebergs and close contact with the local Inuit population, all while providing cultural and historic insight through a wonderful variety of shore excursions and lectures.

Antarctica offers mountains, fjords, glaciers, icebergs and wildlife, including several species of penguins. Polar circle boat landings, expedition guides and lecturers create an intimate learning experience and are perfect for the well-traveled in search of mind-enriching experiences.

Theme Cruises
In addition to their standard cruise voyages, Hurtigruten also offers cruises that have a certain theme. Some of their current themed cruises include From Vikings to WWII (featuring lectures and presentations by special guest Dr. Terje Leiren), Christmas & New Years in Norway (providing the chance to explore Normandy with holiday themed onboard activities), and Astronomy Cruise (focusing on the Northern Lights, with special expert lecturers onboard to accentuate the experience). Hurtigruten offers a guarantee on 12-day Classic Round Voyages, where you will receive a free cruise if you do not see the Northern Lights the first time around. Please contact us if you’d like pricing and availability information on any of Hurtigruten’s theme cruises.

Once-In-A-Lifetime Excursions
During a Hurtigruten cruise, you have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of unique shore excursions. Possibilities, depending on the time of year and destination, include city tours, snow mobile safaris, riverboat trips, dog sledding, kayaking, concerts, museums and much more! Dog Sledding on a Hurtigruten CruisePolarcirkle Boat Landings are often available to Hurtigruten guests in Antarctica, Greenland and Spitsbergen. These special vehicles allow you to get up close and personal with the native wildlife during your Hurtigruten cruise, an opportunity not found on many other cruise lines.

What's New for Hurtigruten?

Hurtigruten introduced two new expedition ships to their fleet, in partnership with Rolls-Royce. These two fully electric expedition ships, each with a total capacity of 530 passengers, are the world's first to be built with true hybrid propulsion. The hybrid ships were constructed in two phases: the first, delivered in early 2019, is  equipped with an auxiliary electric engine that reduces the CO2 emissions by 20%. The second ship was built with a full-fledged hybrid engine capable of powering the entire ship for extended periods of time as well as across greater distances.

The popularity of Hurtigruten and the Northern Lights Voyage is becoming quite apparent among travelers. A recent survey of British travelers puts Hurtigruten Northern Lights voyages at the very top of travel destination lists. Hurtigruten makes it very easy to experience the Norwegian Winter providing many attractive offers and shore excursion packages.

In February 2012, Hurtigruten announced that in less than two years after its launch, their "1893 Ambassador" Loyalty Program achieved an impressive 27,400 members. Members enjoy exclusive 10% discounts on the cruise component of any Classic Norway voyage longer than three days and 5% savings on Explorer Voyages to Europe or the remote destinations of Greenland, Antarctica or Spitsbergen. A variety of other benefits are available, including 5% savings on selected excursions on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage itineraries.
