Senior Citizen Cruise DiscountsIn the cruise industry a senior citizen is generally defined as someone that is at least 55 years old (however, Costa Cruises defines a senior citizen as someone that is at least 60 years old. Certain cruise lines offer discounts to senior citizens on select sailing dates. This is the reason why, when pricing out a cruise for you, we ask if you or any of your travel companions are a senior citizen. Among the cruise lines that offer discounts for senior citizens (on select sailings) are: Azamara, Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean.
A great aspect of senior citizen discounts on cruises is that not only the senior citizens themselves get the discounts; if at least one person in the room is an eligible senior citizen, the second passenger will also get the discount! Upon boarding the ship, a qualifying senior citizen will have to show valid, government issued, photo identification for proof of age.
When booking a double occupancy stateroom for only one person, many cruise lines tend to charge almost the same price that they'd charge for two people. For senior citizens traveling solo, it's good to know that there are select ships that feature single occupancy staterooms, allowing one to avoid such charges. For instance, Holland America Line and Costa Cruises each have ships with single occupancy staterooms. Holland America Line has a special room-sharing program for single travelers. This program offers singles select accommodations where you are guaranteed to travel at the double occupancy price, with another person of the same sex. Please be aware that in such a program you may end up alone in the cabin, if they can't match you up with someone else. Check out our Singles Cruises page for more information about this subject.
